2013 Charity CEO Compensation Study

CEOs of large and midsize U.S. charities earned a median salary of $125,942 in 2011, a 2.5 percent increase over the previous year, a report from Charity Navigator finds. Based on a survey of nearly four thousand organizations, the report, the 2013 Charity CEO Compensation Study (17 pages, PDF), found that the median salary for nonprofit CEOs was highest in the Northeast ($149,523) and mid-Atlantic ($147,474) regions, at large organizations with total expenses of more than $13.5 million ($244,209), and at organizations working in the areas of education ($170,178), arts and culture ($159,650), public benefit ($142,661), and health ($137,919). In addition to a list of the highest CEO salaries in each issue area, the report also includes advice for donors who want to assess a charity's executive compensation, including how to obtain comparison data, finding out whether the organization has a compensation committee and whether the CEO has received a loan, and factoring organizational performance in relation to CEO compensation.
