California Physician Facts and Figures

In anticipation of increased demand for physician services as the senior population grows and more individuals obtain health insurance as a result of healthcare reform, the California HealthCare Foundation has issued a report describing the market landscape for physician services in California. The report, California Physician Facts and Figures (33 pages, PDF), found that California barely meets the nationally recognized standard for supply of primary care physicians, with only three regions in the state meeting the recommendations. The report also found that nearly 30 percent of physicians in the state are over 60 years old — a higher percentage than any other state; that family and general practitioners earned only 88 percent of the national average in 2008; and that Latinos account for nearly 40 percent of the state's population but only 5 percent of its physicians.
