Covering Kids & Families

Although the number of uninsured children in the U.S. has declined over the last few years, roughly 7.8 million kids are still without health insurance, including four million who are eligible for public insurance programs, according to research from the Urban Institute's Assessing the New Federalism Project. The research also shows that the vast majority of low-income parents would enroll their children in a public insurance program if they knew they qualified. Working with more than 160 national organizations and several corporations, Covering Kids & Families, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has planned more than 1,700 events in August and September to inform families around the country about low-cost and free healthcare coverage. The snapshot report on uninsured children from the Urban Institute is the first in a series based on the organization's 2002 National Survey of America's Families.
