2005 National Land Trust Census

Private land conservation has more than doubled in the past five years, with 1,667 local, state, and national land trusts having preserved some 37 million acres nationwide — an area equal to sixteen times the size of Yellowstone National Park — according to a new report from the Land Trust Alliance. The 2005 National Land Trust Census (22 pages, PDF) also finds that land trusts primarily focus on wildlife and open spaces and have developed greater professionalism and built larger endowments over that span.
