According to Best Health Plans of 2005, a new report from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, most top-quality HMOs in the United States are offered by nonprofit health plans. NCQA annually collects data from hundreds of health plans and analyzes their performance on dozens of objective measures of effective clinical care and member satisfaction. This year's data, which appeared in the October 10, 2005, issue of U.S. News & World Report, reveals that among "commercial" HMOs, 68 percent of the top fifty are nonprofits; among Medicare HMOs, 84 percent of the top twenty-five are nonprofits; and among Medicaid HMOs, 72 percent of the top twenty-five are nonprofits.
