College Sustainability Report Card 2008

According to the Sustainable Endowments Institute's College Sustainability Report Card 2008 (236 pages, PDF), college campuses across North America are ramping up their green practices and policies, with more than two-thirds of the schools surveyed showing improved performance over the past year. Funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the V. Kann Rasmussen and Nathan Cummings foundations, the report surveyed the two hundred public and private universities with the largest endowments and found that nearly 45 percent have committed to fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions. At the same time, the majority of those institutions continue to lag in applying sustainability practices to their endowment investments, with many receiving particularly low grades in the areas of shareholder engagement and endowment transparency.
