Emergent or Illusory? Community Wildlife Management in Tanzania

Tanzania has the second largest population of elephants in Africa and the largest number of lions on the continent. In the 1980s, support grew within the country for greater local community involvement in wildlife management as a means of pursuing both conservation and rural development goals. Emergent or Illusory? Community Wildlife Management in Tanzania (38 pages, PDF), a new report from the Sand County Foundation's Bradley Fund for the Environment, found that reform processes that were conceptualized back then have not materialized. The Bradley Fund is supported by the Milwaukee-based Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.
