Innovating Toward Excellence: Education Entrepreneurs and the Transformation of Public Education

NewSchools Venture Fund, a nonprofit venture philanthropy firm that supports education entrepreneurs, has issued a follow-up report to its tenth annual NewSchools Summit, which took place in May. The report, Innovating Toward Excellence: Education Entrepreneurs and the Transformation of Public Education (32 pages, PDF), contains comments from the likes of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Green Dot Public Schools chief academic officer Cristina de Jesus, and Mastery Charter Schools CEO Brian Sims. De Jesus and Sims were part of a panel on failing schools and shared their thoughts, based on their experiences, about what it takes to turn around a failing school. The summit was supported in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates and Annie E. Casey foundations.
