National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week

"Celebrate Volunteers — The Spirit of America!" is the theme of this year's National Volunteer Week, April 27-May 3, which recognizes and celebrates the efforts of volunteers at the local, state, and national levels. The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, the coordinator of the weeklong event, has put together an online toolkit (40 pages, PDF) to help nonprofits promote the event, highlight the achievements of volunteers, and inspire more people to help. In addition to statistics on volunteering and examples of local projects, the guide features examples of press releases, letters to the editor, media advisory notices, and public service announcements. Through the Unity in the Spirit of America initiative, Points of Light also invites organizations and individuals to dedicate their volunteer projects in honor of someone who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. As of February 2003, more than 4,000 projects had been registered as tributes.
