The news interests of people who use Digg, Del.icio.us, and Redditis markedly different from that of the mainstream press, a new report from the Project for Excellence in Journalismfinds. The Latest News Headlines — Your Vote Counts(16 pages, PDF) compared the news agenda of the mainstream media over a week with that found on a host of user-news sites for the same period. According to the report, while the mainstream press was focused on Iraq and the immigration debate, the three leading user-news sites were more focused on stories such as the release of Apple's iPhone. In addition, 70 percent of stories on user-news sites were sourced to blogs or Web sites such as YouTube and WebMD, the focus of which typically is something other than news.
