The New Orleans Index at Five: Measuring Greater New Orleans' Progress Toward Prosperity

The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center and the Brookings Institution have issued a report on the New Orleans metro area five years after Hurricane Katrina. Funded by the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Community Revitalization Fund, the Open Society Institute, and the Ford and Surdna foundations, the report, The New Orleans Index at Five: Measuring Greater New Orleans' Progress Toward Prosperity (48 pages, PDF), offers a comprehensive analysis of the city and region's health based on twenty key indicators. The report, which includes an assessment of the impact of the recession and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on the region's recovery, found that although greater New Orleans has rebounded and become more resilient, key economic, social, and environmental trends remain troubling and will continue to challenge the region.
