World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

December 1 is World AIDS Day, and to mark the event the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation has released an updated fact sheet on the HIV/AIDS pandemic, including data on impact by region and on women and young people, as well as tracking the global response. According to the HIV/AIDS Policy Fact Sheet (2 pages, PDF), the number of people living with HIV/AIDS globally has increased due to continuing new infections, people living longer with HIV, and general population growth from 29 million in 2001 to 33.2 million in 2007. On a more positive note, the number of new HIV infections declined from 3.2 million in 2001 to 2.5 million in 2007, while the global prevalence rate has leveled off at 0.8 percent. The rate is much higher in Sub-Saharan Africa, however, which is home to two-thirds of the people living with HIV/AIDS.
