Gift for Opportunity is a nationwide program that provides matching funds for donations made by the bank's customers and associates. The $1.5 million gift to alleviate food insecurity in America was raised over a six-week period starting in December. Bank of America plans to activate the fund throughout the year to support a range of critical community needs. In addition to financial support, the bank's employees donated more than one million hours of volunteer service in 2010 and hosted more than fifty events in December focused on alleviating hunger.
"The issue of food insecurity really motivated our customers and associates to give generously of their money and time," said Bank of America Charitable Foundation president Kerry Sullivan. "The money we give in terms of charitable grants is extremely important, but it's also our associates who give their time and their talents to provide opportunities for the families and children in the communities we serve."
