David Rubenstein Awards $10 Million to Duke Athletics

Duke University has announced a $10 million gift from longtime supporter and board vice chair David Rubenstein.

The gift will help support the priorities of the Duke Athletics Department as outlined in Duke Forward, a $3.25 billion university-wide fundraising campaign launched in September. The gift matches a $10 million gift from Steven Scott and his wife, Rebecca, to Duke Athletics earlier this fall.

Rubenstein (class of 1970), co-founder and managing director of the Carlyle Group, the New York City-based global asset management firm, has donated tens of millions of dollars to the school over the years, including $15 million in May for the school's the Innovation and Entrepreneurship initiative and $13.6 million in 2011 in support of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.

"The breadth of David Rubenstein's interests at Duke is matched only by the depth of his generosity," said Duke University president Richard H. Brodhead. "We are grateful for the many extraordinary ways he has supported Duke's highest priorities and enriched the student experience."
