The Fund for New York City Hunger Relief — a collaboration between Feeding America, the Food Bank for New York City, and City Harvest — has announced a $1 million grant from the Switzerland-based Starr International Foundation to support increased food distribution in the city.

Since the fund was established in 2003, it has supported more than two-hundred soup kitchens, food pantries, and other charitable food providers in the five boroughs of New York City. The grant will be used to support the fund axs it enters its seventh year of operation while providing additional food to New Yorkers affected by the ongoing recession.

"We are very grateful to receive this grant from the Starr International Foundation during these difficult financial times," said City Harvest executive director Jilly Stephens, Food Bank for New York City CEO Lucy Cabrera, and Feeding America CEO Vicki Escarra in a joint statement. "Now, more than ever, it is important that we are able to provide food assistance and support to New Yorkers."
