Mellon Foundation Awards Grant for 'Rite of Spring' Centennial Celebration

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has announced a $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support a year-long centennial celebration of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Rite of Spring."

Inspired by the landmark work, new works by choreographers, composers, directors, and performers will be commissioned and premiered during Carolina Performing Arts' 2012-13 season. The grant also will support two academic conferences about the ballet as well as other projects, including Rite of Spring at 100 and Rite 100, in which students, faculty, and visiting artists and scholars will participate.

Several works already have been commissioned, including a joint production between the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company, a New York theater ensemble, as well as a piece by Uzbek composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky that will be performed by the Silk Road Ensemble, led by artistic director Yo-Yo Ma.
