People in the News (11/11/12): Appointments and Promotions

The Pew Charitable Trusts have announced the appointment of ALAN MURRAY as president of the Pew Research Center. Murray, currently deputy managing editor and executive editor, online, for the Wall Street Journal, is an award-winning journalist with decades of experience covering politics and economics. Over the years, he has served in numerous roles at the Journal, including Washington bureau chief, and currently has editorial responsibility for the media giant's Web sites, including WSJ.com and MarketWatch. He succeeds public opinion expert ANDREW KOHUT, who will stay on as the center's founding director and continue to provide counsel on political polling and global attitudes research.

The Polk Bros. Foundation has announced the appointment of GILLIAN DARLOW as CEO, effective January 7. Darlow, currently principal of Chicago's Civic Consulting Alliance, has held leadership roles in civic, arts, and education organizations including the Field Museum, Redmoon Theater, and Leadership for Quality Education. Darlow's hire represents the foundation's first top executive change in nearly twenty years.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced the appointments of JENNYFER HOLMES as scholarship and donor services officer, LIANA GARCIA-FRESHER as senior philanthropic services officer, and DOUG SHIPMAN as a program officer in its Nonprofit Support Program. Holmes, previously New England regional manager at Inroads, earlier served as a graduate admissions counselor for the University of Bridgeport and worked in various management capacities for the Chubb Group. Garcia-Fresher previously served as executive director of the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation, as president of Fresher Consultants LLC, and as president and CEO of Prevent Blindness Connecticut. Shipman, most recently director of educational program development at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, earlier served as director of the Wethersfield Historical Society.

The Bush Foundation has announced the planned departure of JAKE VOIT, manager of its multi-partner InCommons program, effective November 2. In making the announcement, the foundation noted Voit's success in building the program team, strategizing use of technology to support community change, introducing storytelling into community development activities, developing a networking Web site to connect leaders across the state, and convening local partners to share resources and tools to support community-powered problem-solving.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has announced the planned retirement of its last charter trustee, HANNA GRAY, and the appointment of a new trustee, SUSAN DESMOND-HELLMANN. Gray, a former president of the University of Chicago, was one of the eight trustees appointed in 1984 by the Delaware Court of Chancery to govern HHMI after Howard Hughes' death; as trustee chair, she led the selection of the institute's two most recent presidents. Desmond-Hellmann, chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, as well as the university's Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor, is an oncologist and recognized leader in the field of biotechnology. Previously, she served as president of product development at Genetech and was associate director of clinical cancer research at Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute, where she was project team leader for the cancer-fighting drug Taxol.

In other news, Funders for LGBTQ Issues has announced the appointment of BEN FRANCISCO MAULBECK as president, effective December 3. Maulbeck, most recently vice president of Hispanics in Philanthropy, earlier served as director of programs at the William Way LGBT Community Center and as a program associate at the Philadelphia Foundation. He succeeds KAREN ZELERMYER, who left in June after seven years at the organization.
