To provide emergency assistance and encouragement to deployed troops, the families they leave behind, and wounded warriors when they return home.
About the Organization:
Operation Homefront was formed in 2002 to support the families of deployed service members immediately following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, the organization has evolved from a local effort to help fellow military families into a national nonprofit organization operating thirty chapters meeting the needs of more than 63,000 military families across thirty-seven states. The national office, which handles cases in the remaining thirteen states and overseas locations that do not have their own local chapter, serves as a safety net supplying critical needs that are not met in a timely manner by the government.
The organization provides direct services to help alleviate emergency financial burdens as well as counseling and recovery support services. Emergency financial assistance takes the form of checks paid directly to mortgage lenders, auto mechanics, contractors, hospitals, doctors, dentists, and other providers. Other assistance, which an applicant receives within twenty-four to seventy-two hours with the help of local media partners, includes food, emergency home repairs, vehicle repairs and donations, computer maintenance and repairs, urgent health care, and critical baby items. Scholarships and social outreach services also are provided. After any immediate crisis is resolved, Operation Homefront counselors work with family members to ensure they are better equipped to handle future challenges.
The Homefront Online portal features resources for military personnel and their family members to help them succeed in military life. The site includes blogs, forums, and articles on military life, home and family, career and money, and mind and body. In addition, visitors to the site can send an eCarePackage, find a local chapter, explore a video archive, view recent news and announcements, and/or make a donation.
Operation Homefront receives support from corporations, foundations, and individuals.
